Surgical Sutures Exporter from India: What Importers and Distributors in Nigeria Check
A Nigerian distributor's suture list is rarely short. One hospital wants violet PGA in 2-0 on a round-body needle, another asks for polyglactin by brand name, and the maternity unit down the road only uses chromic for episiotomy repair. Each of those is a separate product, and each needs the same documents behind it. This guide sets out what importers and distributors in Nigeria check before ordering from a surgical sutures exporter in India, and how to write the RFQ so every carton that lands in Lagos matches what theatres actually use.

In short
Sutures are ordered by polymer, size and needle, and a single wrong line can leave a distributor with cartons no theatre will open. Here is what importers in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt check before they place a suture order with an exporter in India.
Most suture problems that reach a distributor are not about quality. They are about specification: the right polymer in the wrong size, the right size on the wrong needle, or a foil label that does not match the registration file. All of them are settled before the order, not after the container arrives.
What should Nigerian importers check before choosing a surgical sutures exporter in India?
Check that the exporter can name the polymer, USP size, length and needle for every line, supply samples from current production, and issue certificates and lot test reports in the manufacturer's legal name for your NAFDAC file. Then agree labelling and minimum shelf life on arrival before production starts.
Check
What to ask the exporter
Why it matters in Nigeria
Polymer
PGA, polyglactin 910, chromic, silk, nylon named per line
Theatres order by polymer, not by price
USP size and length
Size (USP 8-0 to 2) and length (45–150 cm) per line
A wrong size cannot be substituted in theatre
Needle
Type, curvature and length on the drawing
Surgeons reject a needle they do not use
Sterility and shelf life
EO sterilisation, expiry, shelf life left on arrival
Slow sizes must not expire in the warehouse
Labelling
Polymer, size, needle, lot and expiry on foil and box
Stores and registration both read the label
Documents
Certificates and CoA in the manufacturer's name
Your NAFDAC file must match the shipment
PGA, polyglactin 910 and "Vicryl": what buyers mean
Hospitals often ask for sutures by brand. "Vicryl" is a brand name for polyglactin 910, a braided copolymer of glycolide and lactide. PGA is polyglycolic acid, a different braided synthetic absorbable. They handle in a similar way, but they are not the same polymer and their absorption profiles differ, so write the polymer, not the brand, on the RFQ and on the quotation.
Our PGA line, for example, is braided polyglycolic acid with a polycaprolactone coating, in USP 8-0 to 2, violet or undyed, with tensile retention of about 75% at 14 days and complete absorption in 60 to 90 days. If a customer's protocol names polyglactin 910, quote polyglactin 910 on its own line.

Buyer tip
Before the first order, ask two or three of your hospital customers for their last twelve months of suture use by line: polymer, size and needle. Most distributors find that eight or ten lines carry most of the volume. Order those in depth and the slow sizes in small lots, and nothing sits in the warehouse past its expiry.
Documents and registration for suture importers in Nigeria
Medical devices sold in Nigeria are regulated by NAFDAC, and product registration, import permits and labelling rules apply to sutures as to other devices. Requirements change, so confirm current guidance with NAFDAC and your registration consultant before ordering, and make sure every certificate is issued in the same legal manufacturer name that appears on your registration file.
Manufacturer's quality certificates and lot certificate of analysis for every shipment.
Sterilisation records for the lot, and the expiry date on foil, box and carton.
Certificate of origin and a commercial invoice that names polymer, size and needle per line.
Samples from current production, kept until the lot is sold through.
The first container taught us to stop ordering by brand name. Now every line says polymer, size, length and needle, and the theatre nurses get exactly what they asked for.
We export surgical sutures from India in USP 8-0 to 2 with round-body and cutting needles, with lot certificates for every shipment.
Comparing suture quotations from exporters in India
Suture prices depend on polymer, size, length, needle and quantity, so request a current quotation and compare exporters line by line on the same basis: the same Incoterm to Lagos (Apapa or Tin Can Island), the same box quantity and the same shelf-life commitment. A cheaper line on a different needle or a shorter length is a different product, not a better price.
Send your suture lines with polymer, size, needle and quantity and we will quote each one separately.
Sterile synthetic absorbable braided Polyglycolic Acid (PGA) sutures with polycaprolactone coating and precision attached 300-series stainless steel needles, providing predictable absorption and superior knot security. Container consignments dispatched from Port Mundra & Port Nhava Sheva, with certificates and test reports shared with every quotation.
Made to CE MDRMade to ISO 13485Made to USP / EPMOQ: 10,000 pcs
No. Vicryl is a brand name for polyglactin 910, a braided copolymer of glycolide and lactide. PGA is polyglycolic acid. Both are braided synthetic absorbable sutures with similar handling, but they are different polymers with different absorption profiles, so specify the polymer on the order rather than the brand.
How do I choose a surgical sutures exporter from India?
Shortlist suture manufacturers in India and exporters who quote every line by polymer, USP size, length and needle, supply samples from current production, and issue certificates and lot test reports in the manufacturer's legal name. Compare quotations line by line on the same Incoterm, port and shelf-life commitment.
Which suture types do Nigerian hospitals order most?
It varies by hospital, but distributors typically carry braided absorbables such as PGA and polyglactin 910 for general and obstetric surgery, chromic catgut where protocols still use it, and non-absorbables such as silk and nylon for skin closure. Base the range on your customers' usage records rather than a standard list.
What is the minimum order for surgical sutures?
Our listed minimum for synthetic absorbable sutures is 10,000 pieces, packed 12 per box and 50 boxes per master carton. Mixed sizes within an order are common; send the size and needle split you need with your enquiry.
Which documents should come with a suture shipment to Nigeria?
Expect the manufacturer's quality certificates, a certificate of analysis and sterilisation records for each lot, a certificate of origin, and a commercial invoice naming polymer, size and needle per line. Confirm current NAFDAC registration and import requirements with the regulator before you order.
