IV Drip Rate Calculator: Drops per Minute and ml per Hour

Enter the volume, the time and the drop factor printed on the infusion set's pack. The calculator gives drops per minute for a gravity infusion and ml per hour for a pump.

How do you calculate an IV drip rate?

Drops per minute = volume (ml) × drop factor (drops per ml) ÷ time (minutes). The drop factor is printed on the infusion set: usually 10, 15 or 20 drops/ml for a macro drip set and 60 drops/ml for a micro drip set. For example, 1,000 ml over 8 hours with a 20 drops/ml set is 1,000 × 20 ÷ 480 = 41.7, so about 42 drops per minute.

Formula: volume × drop factor ÷ minutes. A calculation aid, not a substitute for the prescription or local protocol.

Drop factors by infusion set

SetDrop factorTypical use
Macro drip (blood set)10 or 15 drops/mlBlood and blood products, through a filter chamber
Macro drip (standard)20 drops/mlAdult fluids and most routine infusions
Micro drip (paediatric)60 drops/mlChildren, neonates and small, precise volumes

Always use the drop factor printed on the pack of the set in use: it differs between manufacturers.

With a 60 drops/ml micro drip set, drops per minute equal ml per hour.

We manufacture IV infusion sets in 20 drops/ml macro drip and 60 drops/ml micro drip, made to ISO 8536-4.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for drops per minute?

Drops per minute = total volume in ml × drop factor in drops per ml ÷ total time in minutes. Round to the nearest whole drop, because a drip chamber cannot be set to a fraction of a drop.

What is the drop factor of a macro drip set?

Macro drip sets usually deliver 10, 15 or 20 drops per ml; 20 drops/ml is the most common for adult fluids. The exact figure is printed on the pack and in the instructions for use.

Why does a micro drip set give the same drops per minute as ml per hour?

A micro drip set delivers 60 drops per ml and there are 60 minutes in an hour, so the two factors cancel: 60 ml per hour runs at 60 drops per minute.

How do I convert ml per hour to drops per minute?

Multiply ml per hour by the drop factor and divide by 60. At 125 ml/h with a 20 drops/ml set: 125 × 20 ÷ 60 = 41.7, about 42 drops per minute.

Is this calculator a substitute for clinical judgement?

No. It is a calculation aid for training and procurement. The prescriber's order, local protocol and the infusion set's instructions decide the rate given to a patient.
